FTIR and Raman Studies of Li2O-Na2O-Bi2O3-ZnO-B2O3 Glasses

Abstract

Glasses with composition xLi2O - (25-x)Na2O - 45Bi2O3-10ZnO-20B2O3 with 5 ≤ x ≤ 25 have been prepared by conventional melt quench technique. The amorphous phase of the prepared glass samples was conformed from their X-ray diffraction and SEM studies.  FT-IR and Raman spectroscopic studies were employed to investigate the structure of all the prepared glasses. Acting as complementary techniques, both IR and Raman measurements revealed that the network structure of the present glasses mainly based on of [BiO3] pyramidal and [BiO6] octahedral units and also on BO3 and BO4 units placed in different structural groups.  The formation of Zn in tetrahedral coordination was observed. Raman and infrared studies have been employed on these glasses in order to obtain information regarding the competitive role of Bi2O3 in the formation of glass network.
